How old does someone have to be to drive an ATV on the trails?

For on-road riding, an ORV driver must:

be at least 16 years old
hold at least a valid G2 or M2 licence
wear an approved motorcycle helmet, securely fastened under the chin with a chin strap
wear a seat belt, where provided
travel at speeds less than the posted speed limit, as outlined below.
For on-road riding, a passenger on an ORV*:

cannot be under the age of eight
must wear a seat belt or use foot rests, when applicable
must wear an approved motorcycle helmet, securely fastened under the chin with a chin strap.

I think it’s different for trails only. I heard it was twelve! Not sure how true this is.

      Hi Jason

Yes it’s 12 when on OFATV trails but 16 with at least a M2 or G2 when on roads or when crossing roads. The trails do often use roads for connection so be wary of where you are, since it’s Ontario law the highway traffic act always comes first.

Nice, I just told my daughter and she’s jacked. Unfortunately, she has to hold the enthusiasm for 11 short months.

I’m going to start garnishing her allowance now because she has a trail pass to pay for!

I’m going to call my insurance company, but does anyone know what type of insurance I should expect to be sold?

      Hi Jason

As a minimum, you’ll need the same insurance that you’ll find with any car on the road which is $1million liability. Beyond that you can get comprehensive insurance which would cover fire, theft, collision etc but that’s up to you. The liability insurance is required by law.

Here’s a link to the Ontario FAQ on the subject:
      http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/driver/drive-ATV-faq.shtml#q12

      Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act
      (https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/90c25#BK1)

Like anything else, the comprehensive portion is based on the value of the vehicle so the newer and pricier the vehicle the more expensive the insurance.

      Cheers
      Steve
